What is the Mapbox API?
On our website, we use the Mapbox API of the U.S. software company Mapbox Inc., 740 15th Street NW, 5th Floor, District of Columbia 20005, USA. Mapbox is an online mapping tool (open source mapping) that is called via an interface (API). By using this tool, your IP address, among other things, is forwarded to Mapbox and stored. In this data privacy statement, you will find out more about the functions of the tool, why we use it and, especially what data are stored and how you can prevent this.
What data are stored by the Mapbox API?
We use Mapbox on our website to display online maps. The map content is transmitted directly to your browser and integrated into our website.
Mapbox automatically records certain technical information when requests are sent to the APIs. Besides your IP address, this includes details such as your browser information, your operating system the content of your request, restricted location and usage data, the URLs of the websites visited and the date and time of the website visit. According to Mapbox, the data are only used to improve their own products. In addition, Mapbox also collects randomly generated IDs in order to analyse user behaviour and to determine the number of active users.
Where are data stored and for how long?
The data collected are stored and processed on the American servers of the company Mapbox. For security reasons, your IP address is kept for 30 days and then erased. Randomly generated IDs (no personal data) that analyse the use of the APIs are deleted again after 36 months.
Legal Basis
If you have consented to use of the Mapbox API, the legal basis for the corresponding data processing is this consent. According to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR, this consent represents the legal basis for processing personal data.
Mapbox also processes data in the USA, among other countries. We point out that in the opinion of the European Court of Justice there is currently no adequate protection level for data transfer to the USA. This can involve various risks for the legality and security of the data processing.
Mapbox uses the standard contractual clauses (= Art. 46 (2) and (3) GDPR) as the basis for data processing for recipients based in third countries (outside of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and especially the USA) or for forwarding data to such a third country. These clauses oblige Mapbox to comply with the EU data protection level when processing relevant data, also outside of the EU. These clauses are based on an implementing decision of the EU Commission. The decision as well as the clauses, inter alia, are available here: https://germany.representation.ec.europa.eu/index_de.
Further information on data processing by Mapbox is available in the company’s data privacy statement.
